Mental Health For Growers
Mental wellness is a major part of our overall health, but the stigma around mental health keeps too many farmers from reaching out for help.
Mental health is a major issue in the ag industry, and it’s important that we care for ourselves, each other, and our communities. Mentally healthy individuals can think, feel and behave in a manner that enables them to perform effectively and be their best selves.
When we have a sore tooth, we go to the dentist. When our back hurts, we go to the chiropractor. When we don't feel well, we go to the doctor. Why don’t we do anything when we are not mentally healthy?
The answer is the stigma around mental health. This is the belief that having poor mental health is something that cannot be talked about and should be ashamed of. A psychologically safe space is one where stigma is diminished and where people feel more comfortable talking about their mental health and reaching out for support.
Facts:
· 1 out of 5 individuals will have a mental illness each year.
· If you have — or think you might have — a mental illness, the first things you must know is that you are not alone, and it is no one’s fault.
How can you tell if you or someone else may be impacted by a mental illness?
Seek help if:
- You feel irritable, helpless, agitated or anxious
- You are constantly worrying, having a hard time concentrating, or are easily angered
- You have changes in your eating or sleeping habits
- Your use of alcohol or other substances increases
Seek urgent help if you/someone:
- Feels trapped, hopeless or empty
- Is thinking/talking about suicide
- Is saying goodbyes/putting affairs in order
- Action: dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
What is a Crisis Hotline?
If you or someone you know is suicidal or in emotional distress, use the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline live online chat or dial 988. Trained crisis workers are available to talk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your confidential and toll-free call goes to the nearest crisis center in the Lifeline national network. These centers provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals.
